Wayfinding: Libraries

Topic for wayfinding project is: Library

After a little bit of thinking here are some idea that I came up with:

1) A system like library or catalog for small businesses to keep track of their inventory (tech gadgets, portable gear for on location events etc) and be able to know who has what and where its at.

2) With the ever increasing technology that kids interact with and that may be more entertaining to them then reading a book my thought was to come up a portable device that can immerse them more into the story. Maybe some sort of projector that can cover the walls and transport them. I was also thinking that local libraries could have a wall with an interactive score board like game that lets the kids track there progress in books and earn prizes or incentives for reading more.

3) Interactive kiosk or computer system to look up a book and find out where the book is located. You would then receive a small print out ticket with a “walk path” to lead you straight to the book. Then scan a member id and the book and leave.

4) A service where you can bring in important and deteriorating documents or photos and have them professionally photographed/scanned and archived to preserve them longer. The contents would go into a database type library where you can then share it to a wide range of people from as little as just your family or the whole world. This could create a virtual/digital museum of history that future generations may not get to see other wise.

Going forward and expanding on Idea #4

My thoughts would be a service where you can bring in important and deteriorating documents, photos, or really any media type that is slowly becoming obsolete) and have them professionally photographed/scanned or converted and archived to preserve them longer. The contents would go into a database type library where you can then share it to a wide range of people from as little as just your family or the whole world. This could create a virtual/digital museum of history that future generations may not get to see other wise. The social media aspect to this preservation idea isn’t what its all about. Its more about preserving the documents an other media types for future generations to see. Making this content accessible to the masses would be great so that people can learn about smaller stories connecting them on a more personal level. I could see museums having a dedicated space to displaying the digital contents on large media screens where content can be interactive. There could be short personal videos from people “donating” the contents giving a back story about the piece. More still to come…

Saving History?

Problem:

The problem is that lots of people have different types media that are slowly deteriorating or becoming obsolete by todays newer technology.

Solution:

A service that will make it easy, simple, and efficient to preserve and or restore the different types of media by turning them into digital versions for future generations.

SWOT

  • Lack of interest
  • Little awareness about service

Opportunities

  • Educating future generations
  • Learning from the past
  • Discovering family secrets or pasts

Threats

  • Data getting accidentally deleted
  • Digital versions getting edited and not being accurate

Competitors:

(few are really about preservation of media types for future generations in terms of museums or historical sense)

The range on the target demographic is broad and doesn’t limit its self to one specific group of people.
